- Small single-headed square frame drum from the Teke people in the Republic of the Congo. The skin is nailed to a robust wooden frame. Held between the legs, the pitch can be changed by the pressure of the heel on the skin. Used to accompany the danse 'okilidzéké' of the young people. Also used in the 1920's in the maringa, an urban music style attributed amonst other to the Loango region on the French Congolese coast, and described as 'Europeanized' since it included also accordion and rhythms borrowed from polkas, marches, hymns, etc. The patenge is also played to accompany the rumba
