Definitie

  • One- or two-stringed archaic spike fiddle of the Iban of Sarawak, Borneo. Its soundbox is half a gourd or coconut shell, covered with animal skin. It exists in a simple form, without any decoration, and in a more elaborate form, where the top of the neck expands into a large disc carved into a floral pattern. The performer places the body of the instrument between his toes while sitting down, the knees bent outward and the soles of the feet together. The strings are moistened to produce the proper sound. The convex bow made of wood or bamboo is held in the right hand. There are specimens in the Museum Volkenkunde in Leiden, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Musée des Instruments de Musique in Brussels, the Sarawak Museum in Kuching and the Musée d'ethnographie de Neuchâtel
