Definitie

  • Goblet-shaped drum of the Luhya-Isukha people of West Kenya. The sound box is a log carved out, leaving out two protuberances to put the strap through. A lizzard skin is attached to the log with pins going through a rubber strap to hold the skin. Isikuti are played in sets of three; this is the smallest one, representing the child of the family. The drum is tuned by placing it next to the fire. The isikuti omwana keeps the constant rhythm; plays the highest tone; is played with the palms of the hands, while hung around the shoulder. It accompanies the isikuti dances and is used for communcaiton, as a signal instrument; the people know what the rhythm means: 'something is happening, let's go and see
