Preferred term

Definition

  • Bambou transverse flute from the Fulbe people in Burkina Faso (made from a millet stalk), about 40 to 50 cm in length. These days, musicians prefer to have tube of forged iron, which does not go out of tune, and hardly wears out. The instrument is played obliquely so as to compensate for the absence of a prepared embouchure. the flute has 3 to 4 playing holes; the flautist can however obtain intermediate tones by fractional fingering
