Concept information
Definition
- Musical bow of the Kamba people of East Kenya. The string of the Uta musical bow is struck with a stick; you can either put it on the ground or on your lap. There is a similar instrument amongst the Kuria (western region), they call it Entono. The kamba call it "Uta wa mundu mue", which means "The bow of the medicine man"; among the swahili it is called "zera ya uta" (Zera is an Arabic word"); uta means "bow"; in the kamba community the medicin man used the bow to communicate to the spiritual world, as well as to diagnose the disease. The Kuria do not link it to healing properties. The uta is also used in the fields, as a solo instrument; the Kamba use it when they are going to hunt or to look for the animals to feed in the fields.
