Definition
- Percussion instruments of the Mijikenda people of the coastal region of Kenya. A silver-coloured plate is put on a wooden round feeted stand. The plate is held in place by a nail. The stand has three feet, nailed on the wooden plate. It is played by a wooden stick without rubber. The upatsu is a loud percussion instrument and is used to accompany mabumbumbu and the musondo drums, in the Mshago dance. It is also played with nzumari and bungo.
