Definition

  • Drum of the Mijikenda-Giriama people of the coastal region of Kenya. The sound box is made from a long hollowed tree trunk. The membrane is made from cow hide pinned to the trunk using pegs. The drum produces sound when struck with bare hands. It is used in the Gonda and the Mshago dance. In most of the dances, this drum represents a man. It cannot be played alone, it is played alongside the Mabumbumbu. The musondo is an old and frequently used instrument. Some musondo have wax placed in the middle of the membrane, to arrive at the required tone colour.
