Definition

  • Percussion instrument of the Kikuyu people of Central Kenya. Cog wheel; spare part for a car. Used to keep the tempo and to add tone colour. Previously made by blacksmiths. The player holds the instrument in the left hand and a beater, a steel rod, in the right hand. The sound is produced by hitting up and down the inside of the ring, which is usually brought to rest on a hard surface, such as a box, on the last beat of each bar. It is nowadays used to accompany the accordion especially the mwomboko dance
